Afaf Shawwa is a Palestinian-Canadian actress who has appeared on stage and in independent films in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. She is a founding member of Nibras and co-creator of the award-winning show Sajjil (Record). Stage credits include: Texterminators (Marignan Theatre, Beirut); Live! With Pascale and Chantal! (2004 NY International Fringe Festival); Kissat Mawt Najib Brax (Beirut, in collaboration with Grid Iron, Scotland); Ayyam Beirut (Gulbenkian Theater, Beirut); Same Difference (Interfaith Project, NY); Sajjil (2002 NY International Fringe Festival); Cracking Mud is Pinching Me (Immigrants' Theater, NY); and Trevor Griffiths' Camel Station (Imagine: Iraq, Artists' Network of Refuse & Resist!). She has also performed with Italy's Silence Teatro company on the streets of Beirut, where she was mistaken for a marble statue. Afaf has adapted Suad Amiry's hit book Sharon and My Mother-in-Law for the stage because of its witty, absurd and tragically funny approach to life under occupation in Palestine. She looks forward to eventually playing the role of Dr. Amiry, whom she got to know in 1996 while living in the West Bank. In addition to her extensive acting training, Afaf has an MA in Communication from NYU and is a freelance Communications Trainer/Consultant. She currently resides in Athens, Greece.
